People are getting restless.

After weeks of waiting for anything to come up about Cloverfield, the followers got what they wanted, sort of. It was discovered that a roar had been added to the 1-18-08.com website. After 6 minutes, a long roar would commence and leave some people wetting themselves. Prior to that, it was clear that some of the loyal following began to get bored with the movie and, in some cases, people just ‘dropped out of the race.’ I find this completely understandable. JJ Abrams’ decision to show this teaser 6 months in advance was a brave one. How could he add to the hype for half a year and at the same time, keep everyone intrigued? Well, it has been almost two months and that question still has yet to be answered.

In the beginning, there were updates on a consistent basis, which in turn made it possible for sites such as this one to grow in popularity. Waking up, getting on the computer, and going to all the Cloverfield blog sites has become a routine of mine. It has come to the point that stopping this routine would be equivalent to blasphemy. I have spent hours and hours researching, posting, theorizing about this movie along with thousands of others. In some message boards it is becoming hostile. Some kid who may have just seen the trailer comes on the message boards having just figured out the pictures on 1-18-08.com flip, writes about it and gets verbally attacked for his tardiness. It is a shame that things are getting to that point. Movies are a form of entertainment that lead to brilliant discussions and debates, not verbal abuse. It is not just newcomers to the movie that get yelled out, no, even veterans of this quest to find more are attacked. Why are they attacked? Well, they could have been researching and come up with a theory that, in their mind, is entirely plausible. Even though it might be feasible, if it sounds stupid or doesn’t make sense in the context of what was seen in the trailer, they are called out.

Of course, this cannot be entirely blamed on the people who post the abuse. JJ Abrams has said that there are a lot more websites dedicated to this movie, but we haven’t found them yet. He chooses not to give ANY hints and leaves us in the dark. So, we find any phrase in the teaser, type it in, and hope it’s a website. Nowadays, there is a lot more viral marketing and it will only continue to grow. All kinds of games are marketed online and because of that, some of those websites are mistaken for websites for Cloverfield. A prime example was ethanhaas. People were so sure that it was related to the movie, especially because of the skyline in the background gradually becoming destroyed. In the end it turned out to be for a game called AlphaOmega. This may seem like common sense to must people but don’t assume anything. That is probably one of the best pieces of advice I can give someone.

Anyway, although the roar might suffice for a week, things will begin to get nasty again. We cannot simply eat these crumbs JJ gives us. We are a hungry people. I don’t think we need official things on consistent basis more so than hints on a consistent basis. That way, it keeps us thinking and on our toes. It actually might be better to give hints rather than official sites or what not.So, in conclusion, JJ if you’re out there somewhere reading this think about your marketing process right now. Do you really think it is safe to assume everyone will stay with this movie for the entire 6 months? In my opinion, I do not think driving people to the point of insanity is the way to go. Dropping hints consistently will get the job done, I believe. Keep in mind that I can give you all the advice in the world for marketing this movie, but it is your duty to these loyal fans to follow through and give them the best damn monster movie of all time.

I agree with you so much and that is what i have been saying that this movie better be really really good and not just another BS movie made with millions of dollars

I want to see stuff i have never seen before and i dont want to go to the movies to spend 10 bucks on a ticket just to be disappointed by another lack luster movie with cheesy effects, fake looking kills, a bad monster, and a bad story. In the trailer the liberty head already looked like a poorly done computer graphic head so imagine whatever the monster is will look like. All I am saying is I DO NOT WANT TO BE MISLEAD JUST BECAUSE OF A TRAILER!

Dread Central has news from a person who claims that there cousin is in the movie or works for the movie. Apparently there will be a new cloverfield trailer released on sept 21 2007 in the credits before the new Resident Evil Extinction movie on this day. AGAIN this is from dread central and boxxet.com who follow the resident evil movie. This however has not yet been confirmed by either website but its worth mentioning

We at AXB Enterprises were among the first to fully immerse ourselves into Cloverfield mania. The weekend following the first trailer viewing was spent doing almost NOTHING but searching, blogging, checking sources, and blogging about Clover(Cloverfield, Parasite, 1-18-08, Overnight…whatever the blog du jour called it). It got me thousands of hits and it kept me wanting to keep digging. Since the only thing that pops up anymore is Slusho, I grow weary.

I believe that if JJ Abrams had other Viral sites devoted to the film, that they would have been leaked to Harry Knowles or a message board by now. Maybe in a week I’ll write another Cloverfield story, but for now I will just keep checking in with those who have more time an energy than I.

    Great post.
I have the same feelings about the “hunger”. I’ve feeded my Google Reader with Cloverfield links and every day I see longingly whether there are some news about the Project… And find only some roars and new disappointments.

Interesting is the metamorphose of the audience - from discoverer and open minded searchers to conservative “guardians of truth” (if there is some one), who smash the newcomers into the old known facts. This phenomenon is really a mirror of our society: newcomers are also fascinated with the things, other people already have found, but the “seniors” are harded, they don’t feel any fascination.

I think even if our searches won’t be paid off, even if the movie isn’t that great, but the sociological experiment, we’ve taken part of, will be the history.

But I don’t give up and hope, JJ Abrams is wise and know that the peoples imagination cannot be exceeded. If he want to make really great movie, he has to include it in his plan: e.g. not showing the monster at all, but showing only naked fearness and successless escapes from an unseen horror - it would make the movie (imha) really everlasting classic.

  14. Matthew1808
    Posted August 28, 2007 at 6:51 am | Permalink

No i dont think so because the movie is based on the monster itself destroying the city now what sense would it make for him not to show the monster that would just disappoint alot of people because thats mainly the whole point of the movie and what most people want to find out is what the monster is and what it looks like. IF he were to have his movie shot like that then he wouldnt have made the trailer the way it was made with everybody asking what is it and then having that detailed roar. Plus unseen horror movies throw away the whole point of a horror movie especially a monster movie and supposedly this monster is supposed to be HUGE so imagine a movie that is supposed to be a destroy everything movie but we cannot see what is doing it! that throws away the whole point of a giant monster movie! I say he should use certain shots of the monster like for example in war of the worlds they only shot the actual alien beings once but the vehicles throughout the movie so something like that like maybe shoot the whole alien/monster whatever it is once like in the beginning and then maybe like 3 or more shots and then at the end when it is supposed to die

Not sure if anyone has tried this but www.youcantdrinkjustsix.com redirects you to http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/vents/acoustics/sounds/bloop.html

This is the “bloop” sound recorded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website. I guess some believe this is the “bloop” communicated by the horse on the Slusho site. It’s Probable that someone registered the domain and had it directed to the NOAA site. Draw your own conclusions.

and armstrong i wasnt being mean its just that when you have already talked about something and somebody comes in with the same stuff that you talked about it really gets annoying. Let me break it down to you, the bloop sound is just a bloop nothing more. The youcantdrinkjustsix website has been debunked by a couple of websites but not all of them and the underwater sounds webstie that it leads you to has yet to be proven to mean anything by any website. The only thing that most people including myself found interesting on the website was that the other sound the mysterious sound or something sort of sounds like the roar from the movie

As far as your hurt feelings go grow up if your going to be posting on the net you’re going to need a much much tougher skin then you’ve apparently got atm. If you dealt with people on a regular basis irl and every once in a while someone came up to you and said “omg if you take those laces on your shoes and tie em in a knot they wont fall off” I’d be willing to bet you’d be a lil more then rude to them too.

So look man im sorry if you felt i was rude but really i am just telling the truth. Ask anybody on this website how i am with people who mention old stuff and stupid theories and they will tell you that hes not being mean or rude he is just setting the record straight on things. I just know how matthew feels after having done the lost experience last summer i know what its like when someone comes in after almost 2 month to post somethin that’s been discussed to no end for the last 2 months. 31. Posted August 28, 2007 at 4:21 pm | Permalink

You, my friend, are right where JJ wants you. You’re writing about it, people are getting pissed off, and his movie is still staying on topic. Does it come to any surprise that the new additions to the sites came only last week when most discussion of it had dwindled to jokes?

BTW, I think JJ is lying about there being clues and other official sites out there for us to disect. There are two reasons supporting this theory:

    1. There are thousands of us looking and searching for any such thing, ranging from High School Dropouts to Medical Doctors and Fanboys to Film Production Specialists. We have been looking for two months now, and the only things we can find are entirely obvious to us. We would have found them by now.

    2. He would lie about this because it does just what I outlined above. It keeps us focused and desparate. There probably a small town’s population on slusho.jp right every second with there noses pressed on the screen looking for something no one has spotted yet. We are slaves to his riddle, and will be until the marketing agency has let something out that blows it wide open.

I haven’t noticed anyone comment on the set in NYC under the bridge in central park from nooneimportant (yes Matthew1808 I know its old)
There is one guy yelling “boom” and another guy shaking dirt.
It would seem to me that they were simulating the foosteps of the BIG GUY coming towards them while they are hiding under the bridge. Im assuming that small raptor-like creatures wouldn’t make such a thud.

  33. Matthew1808
    Posted August 28, 2007 at 6:13 pm | Permalink

somebody said that scene was the ending scene with rob and beth under the bridge focusing on each other and not on the chaos. i remember that it was mentioned in the call sheet and the call sheet was proven to be legit

  34. Maffusse
    Posted August 28, 2007 at 6:57 pm | Permalink

    That call sheet says nothing.
That is not the ending. The main characters are huddled under a bridge covered in blood and terrified at what is coming. Re-examine the actors under the bridge when the grip says “BOOM”. They shudder in fear……….
The grips are obviously simulating the monster’s stomp and the actual thuds will be placed during post-production.
Here is where our call sheet misled.
-”That’s a wrap” was just “the wrap” for the location
-call sheet scene lists don’t represent chronological shooting of the movie
-The call sheet even tells you Rob and Beth are “going to wait out the chaos” (Great way to end a movie)
Imagine if the Japanese hid in subway tunnels to “wait it out” from GODZIlla and that was how it ended. NAH!

  35. don't be stupid
    Posted August 28, 2007 at 10:02 pm | Permalink

there are a few hardcore people who will always stay interested. there is a new crowd of people learning about all this daily. but…there is also a massive amount of people who expressed casual interest, found out everything to date…and then left it all behind as there wasn’t anything to really keep them going.

in terms of marketing, what you want to do is build up an interest first. everyone who knows anything about cloverfield is now what we can call an “interested party.” this means that when new news comes out…they will pay attention, come back to the table for awhile, tell their friends…etc.

you can’t continually string people along with a tidbit here and there for a period of 6 months…everyone will burn themselves out except for the hard core. so what you do is build interest, and then wait….then you release a whole glut of new information, sites, viral sites, viral marketing….and everyone comes back, except now they’re telling everyone they can find about it….and those people are now telling everyone they know…

its a progression….so seriously, don’t expect to really see anything major until september…probably around halfway through, though the RE3 movie would be a great time to put out a different teaser….or at least a more complete teaser

anyway guys…trust me when i say that JJ knows what he’s doing, he knows how to market things because he knows how to listen to the experts yet also follow his own intuition….

expect some hints, a few dropped references…things like that, but thats all just tweaking…the real stuff will be dropped later.

I will respectfully disagree with “don’t be stupid.” You have your opinion on the marketing and I have mine. In regards to ryan, I think mirroring that picture and seeing that face is just another ‘demon in the hair’ incident. Your mind does something called matrixing (I think that is what it is called) where it analyzes a photo and tries to find anything it can recognize. Brains do not like giving up on something so that is why they find things like that. It is just smoke, in my opinion.

Just got done reading that, actually…sounds intriguing…but then again…its only rumor. It *would* be amazing if that *was* the new trailer, though! ^_^

Anyone discussed the “shrapnel” that flies out of the explosion in the trailer
I noticed that they flare up when they reach the sky.
So if the aintitcool report was right. Maybe those were the scales flying off the monster and maybe the explosion was caused by military ordinance not the monster.

you know what i just read that article and to me it sounds like somebody who had an idea for the movie like thought of it and then said that he got it from somewhere and then started to wrtie about it and sent it to AICN.com. Now if what he says is true and that is a scene in the movie or whatever you gotta go back to thinking about those raptor like creatures causing more havoc than the monster itself. Now the whole thing about the scales turning into the raptor like creatures is a little dumb it sounds like something out of a low budget monster movie. The thing i am most interested in is the part about the girl who keeps saying she doesnt feel well and then they say she has been bitten. Now this element has been used in the resident evil movies( i know you hate resident evil subzero lol) and when a person gets bitten by a zombie they catch the virus and turn into a zombie. Now what i am thinking is if the monsters scales turn into smaller creatures and they go around and bite people then maybe the people who get infected also turn into creatures which would explain why they yell she has been bitten. So if i am right, Abrams might go along the lines of a plot where they need to find or create an antidote for people who have been bitten by these creatures before its too late and they turn into creatures themselves. THAT WOULD BE AN AWESOME MOVIE!!!!!!!! if that is true

i also heard something that when the people get bit in the movie they start to throw up black blood, i forgot where i heard this though

Ill try to explain more clearly
If the unfiction report is true about the scales coming off the monster after being hit with bullets, missiles etc and then they turn into smaller creatures then my theory is this:
By the time the party gets to the roof the battle has already started. The military uses some huge explosive on the monster which is the explosion you see in the trailer. The things that fly out of the explosion are the monster’s scales. Watch how they go way farther than normal shrapnel or debris and spread throughout the city.

So is it one of the scales that hits the roof Rob and Co. are standing on? If so, why does it explode? I have never owned a lizard (or movie monster), but I would imagine that scales would not explode.

“JJ Abrams has said that there are a lot more websites dedicated to this movie, but we haven’t found them yet.”

Just to clarify…. that isn’t what he said. He said that 1-18-08 was the only site found, which was true at the time he sent the email to AICN. There is a very distinct difference between the two.

    Posted August 30, 2007 at 2:00 pm | Permalink

I don’t know it was just a theory.

Could be the smaller monsters busting out of the scales in mid air.
I don’t have time, but if anyone can take a real close look at the trailer when the one lands next to the people on the roof.

Question: Why does Rob turn and look towards the sky right before the explosion, like he sees something? I was wondering if maybe what he sees is a fighter jet in the sky and maybe the jet is the one that causes the explosion. You don’t hear a jet I know, but you also don’t hear Rob say “shut up” at the point.

I would guess Rob sees a fireball falling in his direction. I would probably turn and look towards the sky too.

  73. maffusse

He is looking in the opposite direction and he does before the explosion

  74. Matthew1808
    Posted August 30, 2007 at 3:06 pm | Permalink

i think he just looks in the direction before the explosion because of the loud siren noises you know like hes trying to see where they are coming from and then the explosion happens and thats when the scales start flying everywhere and blowing stuff up

The fireballs have been discussed a bit on the IMDB boards but no one has come up with anything good. I wouldn’t even know what to say about them.

  78. Matthew1808
    Posted August 30, 2007 at 6:51 pm | Permalink

i dont think anybody hs anything on the fireballs because nobody had this tip before. Now if those fireballs turn out to be the scales of the monster then why would they explode when they land? wouldnt that kill them?? also when you look at the trailer the roar and the explosion looks like it happens all the way across town. So how are people saying that they saw it and they are passing the apartment where they were holding the part for rob. how can the monster get from one place to another in that amount of time? unless we are dealing with more than one monster? or unless the raptor like creatures arent that small? what if they are big but not as big as the monster? and only one is chasing the people. If that is so then who throws the head? if the big monster is across town? getting shot at? has anybody else noticed this?

  79. SubZero15
    Posted August 30, 2007 at 7:21 pm | Permalink

Someone made the point that we do not know how much time there between the lights going out and the rooftop scene.

  80. Matthew1808
    Posted August 30, 2007 at 7:54 pm | Permalink

but even still the rooftop scene is when the explosion happens. the lights go out during the roar. and when they go on the rooftop the explosion happens in the background. now to me that looks far away and is where the roar happens again. Now after the explosion is when those fireballs come into play. If the fireballs are the scales of the monster then they come from a far away distance than robs apartment if it even is robs apartment because he is at a surprise party so he could be at anybodys apartment. anyway then mad people are running away from something and what i am saying is that the monster cannot be all the way across town, then be chasing people in an instant unless it has some sort of telepoting power or it can fly but i dont think that is the case. And besides the monster has to be coming in from the water area because it throws the statue of liberty head and we all know that she stands out in the water. so what i am saying is that it might be possible you have one monster that is already being attacked across town and then the explosion wakes up the other monster in the water which causes it to get mad and tear off the head and throw it into the street and then it swims or walks into the city and that is the monster on robs side of NYC. See now the trailer makes no sense at all and i dont think people really looked at this entirely. Like i said we may be dealing with more than one monster I mean JJ did say we need our own godzilla and in every godzilla movie he fights somebody else so could this be our story in NYC? could it be the bad monster attacking the city and the good monster that rises up and throws the liberty head because its pissed off that it had to wake up? and then in godzilla movies godzilla and the evil monster usually face off in a part of the city and battle until one dies or leaves. Come on somebody has to admit I have a point here!!!!!!!!

No, I do not think there is another monster the same size as the original one. Not everything in this teaser, much less a whole movie, is going to be perfect. This is probably one of those instances. I do not think the fireballs are scales because how can you fire something at the monster and the scales go the direct opposite way 1000 feet. That could be one of those mistakes but that is a little too farfetched. I am sitting here thinking about what could cause that explosion. The thing that keeps coming to my mind is maybe this monster has some sort of arsenal of fire breath or some other unimaginable weapon. I just don’t know but I definitely do not think there is another monster of the same size, nor do I think those fireballs are scales.

I want to mention something completely different now. Everyone has assumed that the cameraman is Hudson Platt (You owe me eleven dollars). I know he is holding that camera in the picture on 1-18-08.com but the “You owe me eleven dollars” voice sounds NOTHING like “It’s for Rob, say something before he leaves.” I figured I would mention that. It has bugged me for a very long time.

I think the explosion was caused by the monster breaking a gas main. Maybe someone (or the monster) was lighting a cigarette outside (no smoking in bars in NYC) ,and caused the explosion. The people running away saying things like ” I saw it. It’s alive. It’s huge” may have been on a taller builiding allowing them to see further than Rob and Co. This is going to be a monster movie. Not all of it is going follow real life physics.

The battle is reported on the news. That’s why they go to the roof.
Why would you go to the roof of a building to “see” an earthquake.

  88. Matthew1808
    Posted August 31, 2007 at 9:56 am | Permalink

the news report mentions nothing about a battle. She says a loud roaring sound and then they go up to the roof but the earthquake words are there because that what they suspected it was, they didnt know what it was so they called it an earthquake because as you can see as the monster roars the camera and the building shake which causes the light to go out

I still say that person who sent in that thing to ACIN is just another person with a theory that made it sound like they were stating facts from the movie or making up a scene for the movie that they thought would sound good. anybody can do it because its not hard to do and on top of all of that it is an “unidentified source”

Hey guys, about that smaller creature theory: I just thought remembered something about whales. There are fish called remoras that are small and known to attach themselves to bigger animals in order to get scraps of food the main animal doesnt eat. Remoras also swim with sharks and manta rays, etc. So, they are like vultures of the sea that swim with bigger predators. That could be an answer to tie in with the whale talk and the smaller creature stuff. That being said, I still am on the fence about it.

Well, as it’s September 4th and nothing has been said, I would think no new trailer was released.

As for Resident Evil… That’s a Sony Pictures release, so a attachment would not be likely. That does not mean a new trailer couldn’t premier then, but being attached to a film by a rival studio, probably not so much.
